Did humans evolve from gorillas?

Not supported

No good evidence supports this, or the evidence points the other way.

No. Gorillas are a cousin lineage that has been evolving for exactly as long as we have, and chimpanzees are closer to us than gorillas are. We did not pass through a knuckle-walking stage either.

What was claimed
That the human lineage descends from gorillas, or from an ancestor resembling a modern gorilla, passing through a knuckle-walking stage on the way to upright walking.
What was actually observed
Whole-genome comparison places humans and chimpanzees as each other's closest relatives, with gorillas branching earlier. Approximately 15% of the genome shows a different local topology, which is the expected result of ancestral variation sorting at random into descendant lineages. Comparative wrist morphology indicates gorillas and chimpanzees knuckle-walk using different skeletal configurations consistent with independent origins.
What the evidence supports
That gorillas, chimpanzees and humans share a common ancestor which was none of the three, and that all three lineages have been evolving independently since. It also supports the view that knuckle-walking was invented separately by gorillas and chimpanzees rather than inherited from a shared ancestor.
What it does not support
Any ancestral relationship between living gorillas and humans. The independent-origins conclusion for knuckle-walking is itself contested, but the framing correction does not depend on it — the phylogeny alone settles that.

The underlying error is treating living species as stages. Every animal alive today is at the end of exactly the same amount of evolutionary time, and a gorilla is no more an earlier version of a human than a human is a late-arriving gorilla. What we share is an ancestor, and it was not a gorilla.

The 15% figure deserves separate mention because it is frequently reported as doubt about the family tree. It is not. It reflects that a species split is a process rather than an event: for a long stretch the ancestral population carried variation which then sorted at random, so different parts of the genome record different draws. The species-level relationship is not in question.
