Can gorillas understand sign language?

Apes do learn hundreds of signs and use them deliberately. The claim that they combine them grammatically did not survive frame-by-frame analysis — and in the best-known gorilla case the records were never released, so it cannot be checked either way.

What was claimed
That gorillas and other great apes acquire sign language, understand it, and use it to converse — combining signs into structured utterances rather than producing them singly.
What was actually observed
Apes in language-training projects acquired substantial inventories of signs and used them to obtain outcomes. Frame-by-frame video analysis of one chimpanzee project found that the great majority of the animal's signs reproduced a sign the teacher had made moments earlier or was still making; apparent multi-sign utterances were largely repetition, showed no consistent order, and did not lengthen with development as a signing child's do. Separately, systematic observation of untrained gorillas documents over a hundred gestures used intentionally, with audience checking, persistence after failure and cessation on success.
What the evidence supports
That apes learn and deliberately use large numbers of symbols, and that gorillas communicate intentionally in the wild with a substantial gestural repertoire nobody taught them.
What it does not support
Syntax. No published ape corpus has been shown to exhibit grammatical structure, and the evidence that appeared to show it turned out to reflect unnoticed prompting by human teachers. "Understanding sign language" also implies comprehension of a grammatical system, which is a different and unevidenced claim from learning what individual signs get you.

Researchers on the ape-language projects argue that the frame-by-frame critique tested a rearing regime unlike their own, and that apes raised in a language-rich environment from infancy show comprehension the analysis never examined. Later bonobo work reported understanding of spoken requests including novel combinations, which some researchers read as syntactic sensitivity and others as contextual inference. And the most-cited gorilla project never released its primary records for independent analysis, so its central claim is unfalsifiable rather than false. What is not disputed by anyone is that apes acquire substantial vocabularies and use them intentionally.

Two claims travel under one sentence and get merged constantly. Apes learning hundreds of signs is real and remarkable. Apes composing sentences is the claim that failed, and it failed for a reason worth understanding: a human who wants an ape to sign will cue it without noticing, and teachers' notes cannot detect that because they record the animal's sign and not the second before it. Only the tape can.

The best-known gorilla case sits in an unusual position. Its records were never released for independent frame-by-frame analysis, which means the central claim has not been tested rather than tested and rejected. That is a real reason for a disputed verdict rather than a hedge.

The part that gets lost in the argument is that gorillas communicate constantly without any of this. Over a hundred documented gestures, used intentionally by the demanding technical criteria — checking you are watching, trying again when it fails, stopping when it works. Nobody taught them, and it is a better answer to "can gorillas communicate" than the sign-language question ever was.
