Is ambergris whale vomit?

Misleading

The words are defensible; the impression they create is not.

Wrong end. It forms in the rectum, not the stomach, as a concretion around indigestible squid beaks — and it leaves the way that implies, or is released when a blocked whale dies.

What was claimed
That ambergris is material vomited by sperm whales.
What was actually observed
Examination of large numbers of sperm whales during commercial whaling established that ambergris masses form in the rectum, bound around accumulated indigestible cephalopod beaks in faecal material. It occurs in a small minority of animals. Smaller masses are voided; large masses can obstruct the gut and prove fatal, in which case the mass is released as the animal decomposes.
What the evidence supports
That ambergris is an intestinal concretion formed around squid beaks, and that the odour valued in perfumery develops over years of oxidation at sea rather than being present when it leaves the whale.
What it does not support
Vomiting. The anatomical location is the far end of the digestive tract. Nor is it simply faeces, though it exits with them — it is a concretion built around material the whale can neither digest nor regurgitate.

The vomit story probably survives because it is more printable than the alternative, and because whales do regurgitate squid beaks — just not this. The beaks that become ambergris are the ones that did not come back up, and the concretion is what the animal does about them instead.

It also answers a question the myth does not: why sperm whales in particular. An animal eating thousands of beaked cephalopods accumulates a great deal of sharp indigestible material, and something has to happen to it.

Ambergris is a concretion that forms in the rectum of sperm whales around accumulated indigestible cephalopod beaks bound in faecal material. It occurs in a small minority of animals. Smaller masses are voided; large masses can obstruct the gut and may be fatal, in which case the mass is released when the animal decomposes. Floating masses recovered at sea or on beaches have undergone prolonged oxidation, which produces the odour valued in perfumery.
