Do bees calculate the perfect hexagon?

The words are defensible; the impression they create is not.

The comb really is close to a regular hexagonal array, and the efficiency is real. The mechanism is what is wrong. Bees do not measure angles: they work roughly circular cells in wax kept near 40°C, and the shared walls between neighbours relax into hexagonal junctions as the warm wax settles. The geometry emerges from physics acting on a material.

The claim as it circulates

Bees are natural mathematicians: they work out that the hexagon is the most efficient shape and build it deliberately, to an accuracy of a fraction of a degree.

What was claimed
That individual bees possess or apply a geometric rule identifying the hexagon as the optimal tiling, and construct cells to that specification.
What was actually observed
Wax is secreted from abdominal glands and worked at around 40°C, near the temperature at which it becomes malleable. Cells begin closer to circular. Where three neighbouring cells meet, the warm wax walls flow towards the configuration that balances surface tension between them, which is a 120° junction — the hexagonal arrangement. Comb built by bees prevented from warming the wax, and comb examined at the edges of an array where fewer neighbours press on it, departs from the regular pattern.
What the evidence supports
That the hexagonal array is a genuinely efficient use of wax for the volume enclosed. That bees produce it reliably. That the immediate cause of the shape is the mechanical behaviour of warm wax under the pressure of neighbouring cells.
What it does not support
That bees compute anything. That the accuracy of the comb reflects measurement rather than the physics of a relaxing material. That irregularity in comb is a mistake — cells at array edges and around obstacles depart from the pattern because the neighbours that would shape them are missing.

Worth separating: the efficiency claim and the calculation claim. The first has a long mathematical history and was finally settled in 1999 when Thomas Hales proved the regular hexagonal grid is the least-perimeter way to divide a plane into equal areas. Bees benefit from that fact. They did not derive it.

The reason to be careful here is that "bees do mathematics" is a claim NatureHQ makes elsewhere — carefully, about trained bees ordering an empty set below one, and with an open dispute recorded about arithmetic. Letting the comb count as evidence of bee mathematics would blur a real finding into a folk story about geometry, and the real finding is the one worth protecting.

Direct observation of cell shape during construction supports the equilibrium account. Confidence is moderate because how much of the final geometry is physics and how much is bee behaviour is still argued in the literature.

Caveats

  • The balance between physical relaxation and active shaping by bees is genuinely contested.
  • That hexagons are the most material-efficient tiling is true and is not something any bee computes.
  • Wax is expensive: producing it costs several times its weight in honey.
