It comes from one small study in a journal with an unclear review process, using subjective scoring, never independently reproduced. An ant touching a mark on its own head has explanations far simpler than self-recognition, starting with irritation.

We are confident about the state of the evidence rather than about ant cognition: the only supporting study has serious methodological and publication problems, and nothing independent has reproduced it.
How far it can be extended
There is no adequate evidence for the claim in the species tested, so extending it to ants generally compounds a weak result with an unsupported leap.
