Orchid seeds contain an undifferentiated embryo and essentially no food reserve, and in nature germination requires infection by a compatible fungus that supplies carbon and minerals. The seedling passes through a protocorm stage sustained entirely by the fungus. Dependence after that varies: many species become largely autotrophic, some remain partially fungus-fed, and a minority never photosynthesise at all.

A phalaenopsis on a windowsill in bark chips is photosynthesising for a living; a ghost orchid with no chlorophyll is being fed by a fungus for its entire life. Stating the general claim without the life-stage qualifier turns a precise finding into a wrong one.
