Dispersal modes vary with plant size, habitat and the animals available. Seeds falling beneath a parent suffer disproportionate mortality from pathogens and seed predators, which alone can favour dispersal even without any new habitat to reach.

It is easy to assume dispersal is about finding new ground; a large share of the benefit is simply not being under your parent, where specialised pathogens and seed predators concentrate. That also explains why the animal doing the dispersing frequently gains nothing intentional — a squirrel that forgets a cache and a bird that defecates a seed are both dispersing without any mutualism being negotiated.
