Snakebite envenoming causes on the order of 100,000 deaths and several hundred thousand permanent disabilities a year, overwhelmingly among agricultural workers in rural South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Venom composition varies between species and within species geographically, which is why antivenom is regionally specific. It is classified by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease.

Snakebite is a serious global health burden, concentrated almost entirely in rural tropical agricultural work — and correspondingly rare in the places most readers of an English-language nature site are sitting. Both halves are worth saying, because sensational coverage inflates the second while the first goes largely unreported. Note what the paper implies about identification: venom varies geographically within a single species, treatment is regionally specific, and none of that can be resolved from a photograph.
