Published measurements of how much tension a species can hold before its xylem loses conductivity were assembled for hundreds of forest species, and compared against the lowest tensions those species actually experience in the field. The gap between the two is the safety margin.

Safety margins are narrow almost everywhere, and — the surprise — they are narrow in wet forests as well as dry ones. Species from rainforests operate about as close to their hydraulic limit as species from deserts do.
