Billions of insects migrate seasonally at altitude, selecting flight altitudes with favourable winds and orienting into headings that produce a consistent seasonal direction even when winds are not perfectly aligned. Migration is frequently multi-generational, is associated with distinct physiological and reproductive states, and moves biomass and nutrients on a scale comparable to bird migration.
