Octopuses undergo a stereotyped senescence: appetite declines, movement becomes uncoordinated, skin degrades and camouflage control is lost, and death follows within weeks to months. In females it follows brooding, during which the animal ceases feeding entirely; in males it follows mating by a comparable interval. Senescence is governed by secretions from the optic glands rather than by starvation alone.
