Is the largest living thing on Earth a fungus?

The core is right; the usual phrasing overstates part of it.

Broadly yes, with two honest qualifications. Single genetically identical Armillaria individuals really do span many hectares — one mapped in Michigan covers about fifteen — and by area they outrank any animal or tree. But the mass and age figures are extrapolations from growth rate rather than measurements, and whether a spread-out genet counts as "one organism" is partly a matter of definition.

The biggest organism in the world is a honey fungus in Oregon covering nearly ten square kilometres and weighing thousands of tonnes.

What was claimed
That a single fungal individual is the largest organism on Earth, with a specific area, mass and age attached to it.
What was actually observed
Samples collected across a Michigan forest were genetically typed and found to belong to one Armillaria gallica genet occupying roughly fifteen hectares. Mass and age were then estimated from measured radial growth rates and typical mycelial density. Larger Armillaria genets have since been reported elsewhere, including in Oregon.
What the evidence supports
That the sampled mycelium is genetically one individual over that area. That fungal individuals reach spatial extents far beyond anything in the animal kingdom. That the mushrooms appearing above such a genet are parts of one organism.
What it does not support
The mass and age figures as measurements — they are extrapolations with wide uncertainty, and are frequently quoted without it. Nor does it settle the definitional question: a genet may be physically fragmented underground, in which case "one connected organism" and "one genetic individual" are different claims and only the second is established.

This is a claim where the interesting part and the quotable part have come apart. The quotable part is the tonnage. The interesting part is that nobody knew fungal individuals could be that large until someone thought to ask a genetic question about samples that looked like separate fungi — which is the same lesson the kingdom keeps teaching.

The vegetative body of most fungi is a mycelium of hyphae permeating its substrate. Fruiting bodies are transient reproductive structures. Individual mycelial genets can occupy many hectares and persist for centuries, as established by genetic identification of isolates across a forest.
