Is pollen plant sperm?

Misleading

The words are defensible; the impression they create is not.

A pollen grain contains sperm cells; it is not one. It is the male gametophyte — a complete, if tiny, organism of two or three cells with its own wall — which lands on a stigma and grows a tube down into the flower to deliver two sperm cells. The analogy hides the most interesting part, which is that the stigma inspects the grain and can refuse it.

What was claimed
That a pollen grain is the plant equivalent of a sperm cell — a male gamete, released in quantity, that fertilises an egg on contact.
What was actually observed
A pollen grain is the male gametophyte generation of a seed plant: a reduced multicellular organism of typically two or three cells, enclosed in a wall of sporopollenin. On a compatible stigma it hydrates, germinates a tube, and grows that tube through the style to the ovule, where it delivers two sperm cells. One fertilises the egg and the other fuses with a second cell to form the endosperm. Incompatible pollen, including in many species the plant’s own, is recognised and rejected before or during this process.
What the evidence supports
That pollen carries the male contribution to fertilisation, which is the part of the analogy that works. That the grain itself is an organism of the alternate generation, with its own cells and its own wall.
What it does not support
That a grain is a gamete. That contact with a stigma is fertilisation — pollination is arrival, and fertilisation may follow hours or months later, or not at all. And it obscures the recognition step entirely: a stigma is checking identity, not simply receiving.

The reason this is worth correcting rather than letting go is that the analogy also flattens the strangest thing about plant reproduction. Plants alternate between two generations, and in a flowering plant the second one has been reduced almost to nothing — a few cells inside the ovule, and a few more inside each pollen grain. Those are complete organisms of a generation we never see. Calling the grain a sperm cell erases a whole stage of the life cycle.

There is also a practical consequence. Because pollination and fertilisation are separate events, a flower can be visited, pollinated and still set no seed — which is exactly what happens under pollen limitation, and what makes counting bees on flowers a poor measure of anything.
