Do plants feel pain?

Plants detect damage quickly and specifically, and signal it through their own tissues. Detecting is not feeling: there are no pain receptors, no neurons and nothing that could constitute an experience.

What was claimed
That plants experience pain, or something like it, when damaged.
What was actually observed
Plants detect tissue damage and respond within seconds via calcium waves, electrical signalling and hormonal cascades reaching undamaged parts of the plant. Anatomically they possess no nociceptors, no neurons, no synapses and no centralised integrative structure. The historical claim that plants respond electrically to harm inflicted on nearby organisms did not survive a controlled replication in which the killings were automated and randomly timed, the plants shielded, and the analysis blinded.
What the evidence supports
That damage detection and systemic response in plants are real, fast and sophisticated, and that they operate by mechanisms which are known and do not involve anything resembling a nervous system.
What it does not support
Pain, which is a claim about experience rather than about detection. There is no structure that could integrate a signal into an experience, and the founding evidence for perception at a distance vanished under proper controls. Absence of a known mechanism is strong evidence rather than logical proof, and this verdict is about mechanism.

The distinction that carries this is between detecting and feeling, and it is not a quibble. A smoke alarm detects fire; a burnt hand feels it. Both are responses to the same event and only one involves experience, and what makes the difference is a nervous system that integrates the signal into something. Plants have the first and nothing resembling the second.

The 1966 origin is worth knowing. A polygraph examiner attached his equipment to a houseplant, reported that it reacted when he thought about burning a leaf, and launched a story that has never stopped. In 1975 someone tested it with the killings automated at random times, the plants electrically shielded, and the traces analysed blind. Nothing. Traces resembling the reported responses appeared throughout the records whether or not anything had been killed.

None of this diminishes what plants do. A plant that detects damage, signals it to leaves a foot away in seconds, and primes them to respond faster is doing something remarkable. It is simply not the remarkable thing the question assumes.

  • Nothing here diminishes the sophistication of plant damage responses, which are fast, specific and systemic.
  • The word "pain" carries a meaning about experience that "damage detection" does not, and the distinction is the entire claim.
