Long-term records of individually marked king penguins show most pairs failing to re-form in the following season, with divorce strongly associated with asynchronous arrival at the colony. Across the family, fidelity varies widely: some Adélie and crested populations re-pair reliably, while emperors and kings are at the low end.
What the evidence supports
That re-pairing is common in some penguin species and uncommon in others, and that the pattern tracks how much slack the breeding calendar allows. Where the cycle is long and tightly timed, a bird ready to breed cannot afford to wait for a late partner without losing the season.
What it does not support
That penguins mate for life as a family trait. Nor does it support the opposite framing of penguins as unfaithful — no choice about the relationship is being made. Some estimates of divorce are also inflated by birds that died rather than left.

The more interesting version of this fact is what determines it. Fidelity in penguins is not a character trait distributed across species; it is a consequence of arithmetic. A king penguin's breeding cycle runs well over a year, so arriving in step with a partner matters enormously, and a bird whose partner has not shown up faces a choice between a new mate and no breeding at all.

Recognition is not the limiting factor — king penguins can identify a specific individual by voice among tens of thousands of birds. They know exactly who is missing. The schedule simply does not permit waiting.
