Do penguins have knees?

They have knees. The thigh bone is short and held roughly horizontally inside the body wall, so the knee sits under the feathers — and the backward-bending joint you can see is the ankle.

What was claimed
That penguins lack knees, and that this explains their upright stance and waddling gait.
What was actually observed
Penguin skeletons carry the complete avian hindlimb: femur, patella, tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus. As in all birds, the femur is short and largely horizontal within the body wall, placing the knee inside the feathered outline. The prominent backward-bending joint lower down is the ankle.
What the evidence supports
That the knee exists and is concealed, and that the short exposed portion of leg contributes to the gait.
What it does not support
That any knee is missing. It is also not a penguin peculiarity — every bird is built this way, which is why a chicken's leg looks as it does. Penguins simply make it conspicuous by standing upright.

This is a rare case where the popular claim is straightforwardly wrong rather than half-right, and where the correction is about birds in general. Look at a bird skeleton and the thigh is the part you were not expecting: short, angled forward, tucked inside the body, doing its work out of sight.

The waddle is real and has a different explanation. Penguins carry a short exposed leg positioned well back on a heavy, upright body — an arrangement that is excellent for swimming and poor for walking, which is the trade every part of a penguin reflects.
