Do orcas live to 100?

Misleading

The words are defensible; the impression they create is not.

A very old female in the best-studied population may approach it; the average is nothing like it, and males average around thirty. One number cannot describe a species whose two sexes differ by twenty years and whose populations differ again.

The claim as it circulates

Killer whales live around 100 years in the wild, and captivity cuts their lifespan to a fraction of that.

What was claimed
That orcas normally live to around a century in the wild, with captivity as the explanation for any shorter figure.
What was actually observed
Decades of photo-identification of the northern resident population off British Columbia, in which every animal is individually recognisable, give mean life expectancy for females surviving to adulthood of roughly 50 years, with maximum ages in the eighties. For males the mean is roughly 30 with maxima near 60. Females first calve at about 14 and cease reproduction in their late thirties or forties, frequently living decades beyond it. Ages for animals already adult when cataloguing began are estimates rather than observations.
What the evidence supports
That orca females can be extremely long-lived, that they substantially outlive males, and that a long post-reproductive life is a real and unusual feature of the species.
What it does not support
A hundred-year figure as a typical lifespan, a single number covering both sexes, or the extension of one well-studied population’s demography to a species with several ecotypes, most of them far less studied.

The hundred-year figure most likely comes from Granny, the matriarch of the southern residents, whose age was widely reported as over a century. That estimate came from back-calculating from the age of a presumed offspring, and later analysis put it considerably lower. It was always an estimate for one exceptional animal, and it became a fact about the species on the way through.

The captivity comparison is a separate question and it is not improved by an inflated wild figure. Captive lifespans reflect husbandry, and the honest version of the comparison uses the real wild numbers — which still show a substantial difference, and are harder to dismiss.

The genuinely remarkable finding gets lost underneath the round number. Female orcas stop reproducing decades before they die, which almost no animal does, and their continued presence measurably improves their adult sons’ survival. That is a stranger and better-supported fact than living to a hundred.

Females first calve at about 14 years, produce a calf roughly every five years, and cease reproduction in their late thirties or early forties while frequently living decades beyond it. Gestation is approximately 17 months.
