Do female spiders eat the male after mating?

Misleading

The words are defensible; the impression they create is not.

It happens, in a minority of species, and it is not what usually ends a spider mating. In most of the 52,000 known spiders the male leaves and may mate again. And in the best-known case that does fit the story — the redback — the male somersaults into the female’s fangs himself, which makes it his tactic rather than her ambush.

What was claimed
That sexual cannibalism is the normal conclusion of mating in spiders, with the female consuming the male once he has delivered sperm.
What was actually observed
Observation across spider families finds cannibalism concentrated in particular lineages — some orb-weavers, the widow spiders, a few others — and absent or rare in most. Within species that do it, frequency varies with the female’s hunger, her prior mating history and the male’s size, and it does not occur at every mating. In several species males mate repeatedly over a season. In the Australian redback the male actively rotates his abdomen onto the female’s fangs during copulation, and males that are eaten transfer more sperm and are more likely to secure paternity.
What the evidence supports
That sexual cannibalism is real, well documented, and biologically interesting where it occurs. That it is concentrated in lineages with extreme size dimorphism. That in at least one species it is male-initiated and increases male reproductive success.
What it does not support
That it is typical of spiders, that it is the normal end of a mating, or that female aggression explains male size and caution across the order. Laboratory arenas, which give the male nowhere to go, also inflate the rates that get reported.

The redback case is worth the detail because it inverts the story completely. The male is a fraction of the female’s size and dies after one or two matings regardless. Given that, being eaten is not a cost he is trying to avoid — occupying the female for longer means more sperm transferred and less chance of her mating with a rival, and he pays with a body that had no further use. The behaviour is a male adaptation, and every retelling that makes it a fact about female aggression has the arrow pointing the wrong way.

Where the female is the one initiating, the usual explanation is simpler still: she is a predator, he is prey-sized, and she is about to make an enormous number of eggs. A male who mistimes his approach is a meal. That is why courtship is so elaborate — the whole performance is an identification signal, delivered to an animal that reads the world through vibration and cannot see him coming.

Why the exaggeration sticks is not mysterious. The black widow is named for it, the behaviour is exactly the kind that documentary footage exists for, and there is no comparable footage of a male walking calmly away — which is what usually happens.
