Are tigers completely solitary?

Misleading

The words are defensible; the impression they create is not.

They travel alone, which is what the word is doing. They also live inside a structured neighbourhood they maintain by continuous scent marking, and most tigresses settle next to their mothers — sometimes on ground their mother gives up for them.

Tigers are solitary animals. Unlike lions, they live alone and only meet to mate.

What was claimed
That tigers have essentially no social life, encountering each other only to mate, in contrast with lions.
What was actually observed
Multi-year radio-tracking of individually known tigers in Chitwan established a land-tenure system: a resident female holds a largely exclusive range, a resident male’s much larger range overlaps those of several females, and neighbours share ground while avoiding one another in time. Systematic recording of marking behaviour found tigers spray-mark heavily and non-randomly, concentrating on boundaries and habitual travel routes, with resident males marking most and rates rising where ranges meet; marks remain informative for days. Following known individuals from birth showed strongly sex-biased dispersal: females usually settle adjacent to their natal range, sometimes taking over part of the maternal range, while males disperse far and spend an extended transient period. Fourteen years of tracking in the Russian Far East found the same structure at roughly ten times the spatial scale, with more female range overlap than an exclusive-territory model predicts.
What the evidence supports
That tigers travel and hunt alone, and that they simultaneously maintain a persistent structure of known neighbours, negotiated boundaries and inherited ground, communicated chemically rather than face to face.
What it does not support
That tigers have no social biology, that encounters are limited to mating, or that the contrast with lions is a contrast between social and asocial animals rather than between two ways of organising a social life.

The word is doing more work than it can bear. "Solitary" accurately describes how a tiger travels and hunts. It is then taken to describe the animal’s whole social existence, and that does not survive contact with the tracking data.

A resident tiger knows which neighbours it has, where their ground begins and roughly what each has been doing recently, because they are all continuously writing on the same trees and trails. The information is dense and it persists for days, which means two tigers who never meet in a year can each know a good deal about the other. That is a communication system, not an absence of one; it is simply asynchronous.

The lion comparison, which is where this claim usually appears, is more interesting once it is stated properly. Lionesses are related females who stay put and hold ground together; tigresses are related females who stay put and hold ground beside one another. The difference is whether they hunt and raise young jointly, not whether they have relatives or neighbours.

True about the travelling arrangements and misleading about everything else. A tiger walks alone, and a tiger also knows exactly which neighbours it has, where their ground begins, and roughly what each of them has been doing lately — because they are all continuously leaving each other messages on the same trees and trails. The communication is dense and constant; it is just asynchronous. Calling that solitary is like calling someone antisocial because they write letters instead of visiting.

Caveats

  • Radio-tracking yields locations rather than behaviour, so encounters and avoidance are inferred from proximity in space and time.

  • Collar samples are small everywhere, because collaring tigers is difficult and expensive.

Good evidence backs this, though some details remain open.

Dispersal in tigers is strongly sex-biased. Females typically settle close to their natal range, frequently adjacent to their mother, and in some cases occupy a portion of the maternal range that the mother relinquishes. Males disperse considerably further, pass through an extended transient period without a range, and may never acquire one. The resulting population structure is a set of local female kin clusters with males circulating between them.

Tiger cubs leave their mother and are on their own

Half of them are. Young males leave properly — long distances, years without ground of their own, and many never get any. Daughters mostly do not. A tigress typically settles beside her mother, often on ground her mother gives up to make room. That means much of a tiger population is a patchwork of related females living next to each other, which is not what "solitary" brings to mind and is closer to how lionesses are usually described.
