Are snakes deaf?

Misleading

The words are defensible; the impression they create is not.

No. Snakes have no eardrum and no external ear, which is not the same as no hearing. They detect airborne sound and are far more sensitive to low-frequency vibration through the ground — a hearing profile, not an absent sense.

What was claimed
That snakes are deaf, possessing no functional hearing at all, and that what looks like a response to sound is really a response to ground vibration.
What was actually observed
Royal pythons were tested with airborne sound pressure and substrate vibration driven independently — which had never been done cleanly, because in an ordinary room a sound in the air also shakes the floor. Auditory brainstem responses were recorded rather than behaviour, removing motivation as a confound. The snakes responded to both stimuli, with much greater sensitivity to substrate vibration and best responses in a low band around 80–160 hertz.
What the evidence supports
That snakes hear, using an inner ear coupled through the jaw and quadrate to whatever the animal is resting on, and that this arrangement is specialised for low-frequency ground-borne vibration. The practical folk observation — a snake notices footsteps long before a voice — is correct.
What it does not support
That snakes are deaf. It also does not establish that snakes make behavioural use of airborne hearing; a brainstem response shows the ear transmitted the signal, not that the animal acts on it. And this is one python species, when snakes occupy habitats from sand to open ocean.

The claim comes from an absence you can see: no ear holes. What snakes lack is the outer apparatus — the external ear and the tympanic membrane — and the inner ear is present and functional, connected to the world through the jaw bones rather than through an eardrum. Since a snake's jaw is usually resting on the ground, that connection works rather well for anything travelling through a surface.

The snake-charming question follows from this and has its own answer. A cobra rising from a basket is tracking the movement of the pipe, not dancing to the tune. That is true, and it is not evidence of deafness — it is evidence that a swaying object is more salient to a defensive snake than a melody.

They have no visible ear, and a missing external ear got read as a missing sense. Both stimuli produce a measurable auditory response; ground-borne vibration produces a much stronger one. The everyday version of this is right in its practical advice and wrong in its reason: a snake will usually detect your footfall long before your voice, and that is a fact about what its ear is tuned for rather than about a sense it does not have.
