What was actually observed
Adult males carry a keratinous spur on each hind limb connected to a crural gland. Venom production rises sharply in the breeding season and is minimal outside it. Females are born with spur buds and shed them before maturity, and have no functional venom apparatus. Fractionation shows a complex mixture including defensin-like peptides, whose genes arose by duplication of ordinary immune-function genes independently of the reptile venom genes they resemble. Envenomation of humans produces severe, persistent pain resistant to conventional analgesia; no fatality has been recorded.
What the evidence supports
That the platypus is genuinely venomous, that the venom is a weapon of male–male competition rather than a hunting or defensive tool, and that it evolved separately from reptile venom from the same kind of starting material.
What it does not support
That platypuses generally are venomous — half the population never is. That the venom is present year-round. That it is used in hunting, which it is not: platypuses eat invertebrates and have no need of it. Or that it is dangerous to humans in the sense of being life-threatening.

The seasonality is the detail that explains the whole system and is almost always the first thing dropped. A venom used to subdue prey would be made all year round. This one peaks when males are competing for mates and is minimal the rest of the time, and only males have the apparatus at all.

What it does to a person is worth stating in both directions. Nobody has been killed. The pain, by every published account, is extraordinary — lasting weeks in some cases and not responding to ordinary painkillers — which is medically interesting rather than dangerous. Envenomation is also rare, because it requires picking up a male platypus in season, which is both unwise and generally illegal.

Platypus and reptile venoms both recruited defensins — small antimicrobial peptides found across animals — and did so independently. The same starting material, picked up twice.
