Is there really an immortal jellyfish?

The reversal is real and the immortality is a translation error. Turritopsis medusae under stress can settle and turn back into polyps, escaping death by ageing. They remain entirely edible, and are eaten constantly. "Biologically immortal" describes senescence, not survival.

A species of jellyfish is biologically immortal — it can revert to its juvenile form whenever it is threatened and start its life over again indefinitely, so it never dies.

What was claimed
That a jellyfish species cannot die, reverting to youth indefinitely and thereby living forever.
What was actually observed
Medusae of Turritopsis subjected to starvation, physical damage or temperature shock in culture contracted, settled onto a surface and reorganised into polyps. Histology showed differentiated cells changing type directly rather than passing through an undifferentiated intermediate. The resulting polyps budded new medusae.
What the evidence supports
That the medusa stage can revert to the polyp stage, that this happens by transdifferentiation, and that development in this animal is therefore not the one-way process it was assumed to be. No upper limit on repetition has been established.
What it does not support
That the animal cannot die. Reversion is a stress response and offers nothing against predation, disease or physical destruction, which is what actually kills jellyfish. Nor does it support claims about the species usually named: the genus has been revised since the original work, so the popular name and the studied animal may not match.

The gap here is between two meanings of one word. Biologists use "biologically immortal" to mean an organism whose chance of dying does not rise as it gets older — it has no senescence. It is a statement about one cause of death being absent, and it is entirely compatible with being eaten within the hour. In ordinary speech immortal means cannot be killed, and the phrase carries that meaning with it out of the paper.

The finding that survives the correction is genuinely remarkable and rarely stated. An adult cell changing directly into a different adult cell type, without first reverting to a stem-like state, was not thought to be available to animals. That is why the 1996 paper mattered to developmental biology, and it has nothing to do with living forever.

It is also worth saying what nobody knows: how often this happens at sea. The reversal has been produced by deliberately stressing animals in culture. Whether it is a routine part of the life cycle in the wild or a laboratory-inducible curiosity is unmeasured, and that is the difference between an interesting mechanism and an ecologically important one.
